The site at Barcaldine is 12 miles North of Oban on the A828 and two hours comfortable drive from Glasgow.  It is also 6 miles from Oban Airport located on the North side of Connel Village which is suitable for recreational / private / and commercial use.   Situated on the southern shores of picturesque Loch Creran, Barcaldine Marine  is being developed by The Marine Resource Centre. It utilises a deep water pier, slipways, unrivalled facilities and expansive warehousing and secure storage for yachts / boats both indoors and outdoors. History : The site has been developed over the years to accommodate other activities, including yacht storage since 1999. MRC  now provides both on land (covered and open) and mooring facilities for yacht storage   Navigation : Loch Creran is approached from Loch Linnhe, and the entrance is well lit and buoyed with deep water at all stages of the tide. Tidal flow is 4 to 6 knots at spring tides.   Yacht Services : Storage / Moorings   Barcaldine Marine offers excellent and unrivalled storage facilities for yachts.  5000 square metres of indoor storage are dedicated to storage and are able to accommodate up to 100 boats.   The MRC site started secure indoor and outdoor yacht storage in 1999 and the demand has been so great that the business has increased space allocation to now make it the largest indoor yacht store in the West Highlands.   Moorings :  In 2006, 50 No swinging moorings were installed and this will increase to 100 as demand exceeds the initial 50 moorings.   The deep-water swinging moorings are in a minimum depth of 6 metres and are laid in trots.  They consist of 54mm ground chain secured by 3 tonne concrete blocks throughout their length. 7 metre, 32mm surge chain is shackled onto the ground chain at 30m centres.  A 32mm rope riser is shackled to the surge chain at a “trawl” buoy and this chain is attached to a surface buoy.   The moorings are suitable for vessels up to 15m in length or 15 tonnes gross weight. All the moorings are professionally inspected  and serviced by a 3rd party specialist.   Barcaldine Marine has designated visitor moorings and these buoys are numbered: D5, D6, D7, E5, E6, E7.   MRC does not permit anything other than unpolluted water to be drained at the moorings.   Slippage and Storage :   The yard has a capability of slipping and storage of craft up to 15 tonnes displacement and 4.26m beam. Tariffs include slipping, scrubbing off, cradling in the yard and storage up to 26 weeks, routine checks of the vessel and re- launching. Developments at MRC : A NEW short stay pontoon will be installed during spring 2010, which will have 6 deep water berths for loading and watering. It will be close to car and dinghy parking, and at the closest shore position to the moorings. Click on the sketch to view the pontoon installation and location on the site.
